County Line BBQ
111 W Crockett St
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-229-1941

Description: Many of this downtown restaurant's customers are tourists and convention attendees, but more than a few locals swear by County Line as among the best San Antonio has to offer. The beef and pork rib platters remain perennial customer favorites. Accompanying side orders of smoky beans and potato salad also demand attention. Homemade bread with a hint of sweetness and Cajun seafood appetizers that feature zesty, cold, boiled shrimp will have your taste buds working overtime. The rustic roadhouse atmosphere of the dining area is unmistakable.

Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant
1526 SW Military Dr
San Antonio, TX 78221
210-922-3511

Description: This Southside establishment serves up a variety of dishes to satisfy the palate of any Tex-Mex or Mexican cuisine connoisseur. Everything from the standard Mexican appetizers to steaks and chicken, seafood, cabrito (goat), nachos and caldos (soups). Mexican dinner plates offer a variety of combinations of old favorites like tostadas, enchiladas, puffy tacos, flautas and chalupas. Desserts include homemade flan (Mexican custard with caramel), homemade rice pudding, Mexican cookies or empanadas. With large airy rooms, high ceilings and a full bar, Don Pedro's is the perfect place for either small or large groups.

Aldo's Ristorante Italiano
8539 Fredericksburg Rd
San Antonio, TX 78229
210-696-2536

Description: Fine Italian cuisine in a romantic setting is the attraction of Aldo's Ristorante Italiano. From business clientele during the week to families and couples on the weekends, this establishment keeps its diners coming back for more. As a result, both lunch and dinnertime see a great deal of dining traffic. The menu includes the ever-popular Snapper Di Aldo -- red snapper in white wine sauce with artichokes, pesto and crabmeat. Even the succulent lamb chops arrive at your table with a noticeably Italian flair.

J. Alexander's
255 E. Basse Road
San Antonio, TX 78209
210-824-0275

Description: With many restaurants from which to choose in the eclectic and busy Alamo Quarry Market, J. Alexander's is the perfect choice for the steak lover in search of a place where semiformal dining meets casual setting. J. Alexander's caters to the meat-and-potatoes fan; however, the menu also offers grilled seafood, salads and french fries. The experience may be casual and somewhat laid-back, but the eatery has been known to get very noisy at times.

Boudro's On The Riverwalk
421 Commerce
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-224-8484

Description: Boasting solid granite walls, the coming-of-age basement known as Boudro's is grotto-like in appearance. Wooden tables, primary colors and primitive iron artwork supply it with a welcoming coziness for you first daters. On any given night, you'll find the umbrella-covered, riverside tables packed with diners. Inside this busy bistro eatery, you'll discover why tourists, conventioneers and locals alike are quick to reserve a coveted Boudro's table. Fusing culinary influences from Mexico, east Texas, Louisiana and the Germanic Texas Hill Country, this busy restaurant serves exceptionally tasty cuisine that remains uniquely American.

Schilo's Delicatessen
424 E Commerce St
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-223-6692

Description: A longtime San Antonio tradition, this authentic German deli in the heart of downtown has been in business for 80-plus years. Since 1917 the family-owned restaurant has drawn locals and tourists alike with promises of delectable deli fare. Judging by the perpetual long lines during peak hours, this place delivers. Actually, opt for takeout if waiting's not your idea of fun. You can't get a better Reuben than here, much less excellent selections of imported meats and cheeses.

Bohanan's Prime Steaks and Seafood
219 E Houston St
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-472-2600

Description: There's nothing as delicious as a perfectly grilled steak, unless you consider perfectly prepared seafood. At Bohanan's, diners enjoy both. And while the elegant restaurant is a tad on the formal side, it certainly isn't stuffy. In fact, it's a nice place for a romantic evening. Chef and owner Mark Bohanan has created a diverse menu that emphasizes freshness, simplicity and flavor. Sides such as spinach accented with olive oil and garlic, crisp sugar snap peas, sauteed squash and grilled wild rice pancakes accompany New York strip, venison tenderloin and other tasty entrees.

Asia Market & Kitchen
1739 S.W. Loop 410
San Antonio, TX 78227
210-673-0662

Description: Both Chinese and Thai cuisine come to the fore at this very modestly priced restaurant. Asia Kitchen's traditional Chinese fried rice and spicy Kung Pao dishes are great, and Thai specialities are also outstanding. Menu choices at the locally renowned eatery are surprisingly extensive. The popular Pad Thai dishes -- stir-fried rice noodles with onions, bean sprouts, ground peanuts and beef, chicken, pork or shrimp -- are a good place to start.

Fig Tree Restaurant
515 Villita St
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-224-1976

Description: This comfortably elegant restaurant lies within the restored 17th-century village of La Villita. Formerly a private residence, the building became the Fig Tree in 1971. Its understated, yet tasteful facade is reminiscent of a Mediterranean villa. One of the best dining experiences in the city will greet you when you enter its doors. Fine linen, elegant china and sparkling crystal are what you'd expect of a restaurant of this caliber -- but that's only the beginning.

Volare Gourmet Pizza and Pasta
5054 Broadway St
San Antonio, TX 78209
210-828-3354

Description: Located in Alamo Heights, Volare Gourmet Pizza & Pasta has the facade of a mom-and-pop pizza shop. Inside, the checkerboard pattern tile and the several dining tables a few feet from the ordering counter reinforce the shop's unpretentious atmosphere. While the strictly cheese-and-pepperoni clientele are sure to be satisfied, Volare has much more to offer. Non-standard pizza toppings include broccoli, zucchini and grilled eggplant. Or how about trying a gourmet pizza with shrimp, smoked oysters, marinated chicken, pine nuts or baby corn? Volare even offers the option of whole wheat pizza crust.
